A sensational occurrence marked the arrival here to day of Sir Francis May, the newly-appointed Governor and Lady May family
After the inspection of the Guard of honour,
a Chinaman rushed out of the crowd and fired a revolver at His Excellency. The shot missed him and lodged in the hood of the Governor's chair. An Indian constable warded off a blow which the man attempted to deliver, and a European sergeant, named Garrott, knock- ed down and arrested the Governor's assailant.
He proved to be a Cantonese, 24 years of age, and the son of a former Hong Kong Chinese constable.
After
his arrest he declared that it was his determination
to assassinate Sir Francis May, owing to his detestation of the British.
